If working at recovery is also being responsible and responding to my needs, then I'm in.
It sounds ridiculous to say, but the phrase 'responding to my needs' seems foreign. If there was nothing else competing at the moment, I'm sure I would take care of myself, even if that meant acting out instead of genuinely doing something productive. However, my perception is that my default position has always been to take care of someone else first, and it seemed righteous.
If it is truly important to 'take care of me,' then I will trust recovery to open those doors and teach me those skills; I don't think I currently know how.
